Homeschool Sewing: Fix It, Fit It & Make It!
4-Week Practical Sewing & Alterations Series | Ages 9 to 14
Give your child more than a craft (give them a skill they can use for life).
This hands-on homeschool sewing series introduces students to real-world sewing skills they can use on their own clothing.
Over four weeks, students will learn how to use a sewing machine, repair clothing, hem garments, understand basic fit and alterations, and creatively upcycle clothing.
No previous sewing experience is required.

What They'll Learn
WEEK 1Β FIX IT π§
Students learn sewing-machine basics and simple clothing repairs, including:
β’ Machine safety, threading and setup
β’ Straight stitching and seam allowance
β’ Repairing opened seams and small tears
β’ Sewing on buttons
β’ Basic hand sewing
WEEK 2Β HEM IT π
Students learn one of the most useful alterationsΒ hemming.
They'll practice measuring, marking, pinning, pressing and sewing a clean hem before working on an appropriate garment.
WEEK 3 FIT IT π
Students are introduced to how clothing fits and how it can be adjusted.
They'll explore:
β’ Basic body measurements
β’ Garment fit and ease
β’ Pinning and marking alterations
β’ Elastic waistbands
β’ Simple fit adjustments
Activities will be adapted to each student's skill level.
WEEK 4 MAKE IT YOURS! β»οΈ
Students put their new skills to work by transforming or upcycling an older garment.
They'll learn that clothing doesn't always have to be replaced,Β sometimes it can be fixed, changed or made into something new.

Students may bring their own sewing machine if they'd like to learn on the machine they use at home.
For some classes, students may be asked to bring a suitable garment from home for alterations or upcycling.
Beginner Friendly
No previous sewing experience is required. Students with sewing experience are also welcome, and activities can be adjusted to their skill level.
